Information Technology Associate's president, Dr. Douglas Gale, has more than 30 years of higher education, non-profit, and government information technology experience. He understands the role of technology in higher education having served as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at two research universities and as a tenured faculty member in both Computer Science and Physics at a research university. During his career he has received over 8 million dollars in external grants and served as a program officer at the National Science Foundation where he received the Director's Award for Program Officer Excellence.
Gale is familiar with initiatives and strategic directions of the nations leading universities through independent consulting, serving on the boards of national organizations such as CREN, CAUSE, and MINDS, participation in groups such as the Common Solutions Group and The Quilt, and being a regular contributor to publications such as Campus Technology Magazine.
He is nationally recognized as one of higher education’s leading network visionaries having played a key role in the creation of both the Internet (P.I. on the original proposal for the NSFNET) and more recently Internet2 (author of the technical requirements document that led to Internet2). His practical experience in wide area networking includes designing and deploying two regional networks (MIDnet and the Washington Research and Education Network) and managing a non-profit Internet Service Provider that provides connectivity to over 88 colleges and universities. He was an early advocate of higher education dark fiber networks and has been the architect of two, the Third Frontier Network in the State of Ohio and the Five Colleges Dark Fiber Network in Massachusetts. His experience in campus networking includes deploying state-of-the-art campus networks at the University of Nebraska and George Washington University.
